Karela United defeated defending champion Asante Kotoko 1-0, taking a significant step toward avoiding relegation from the Ghana Premier League (GPL).
The outcome puts the Porcupine Warriors four points behind the lead and prevents them from winning consecutive games for the first time since round seven of the Ghana Premier League.
After 63 minutes, Samuel Atta Kumi converted a penalty kick for the game’s lone goal to give the Passioners the victory.
It was a contentious penalty that replays indicated was outside the box.
Karela United hung on to defeat the reigning champions, allowing Shaiba Ibrahim Tanko to begin his tenure as head coach with a triumph.
With 18 points right now, Karela United is in 14th place, whereas Asante Kotoko has 24 points and is in fifth.
In week 16 of the Ghana Premier League, the Porcupine Warriors will host the Accra Lions on Sunday, and Shaibu Tanko’s team will visit the Bibiani GoldStars on Monday.
