After a startling final-day outcome against Hearts of Oak on Sunday, Real Tamale United (RTU) will play in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) next season.
The northern giants beat the Phobians at the Accra Sports Stadium to finish above the relegation zone with their greatest performance of the season.
RTU, who knew that a win would be enough, went behind after nine minutes when their goalie was penalized for improper posture.
Hearts took the lead with Suraj Seidu, but RTU equalized 10 minutes later through Ronald Frimpong.
In the 30th minute, David Abagna kept his calm and netted a penalty to put RTU ahead. Frimpong made it 3-1 with his second goal just before halftime.
RTU came out of the interval with the same mindset, scoring their fourth goal on an own goal by defender Mohammed Alhassan.
RTU’s 4-1 win over previous champions is a famous outcome, and they will be ecstatic that it insured their survival.
They were determined not to be relegated to the Division One League, as it took them eight years to return the last time they were relegated. They won their final two games to clinch a playoff berth for next season.
Hearts of Oak, meanwhile, finish outside the top four in the league, but they have a trophy to battle for next week when they face Bechem United in the MTN FA Cup final in Kumasi.
