Asante Kotoko defeated Berekum Chelsea thanks to Stephen Mukwala and Serge Zeze, knocking the league champions back to second place in the Ghana Premier League (GPL).
The Porcupine Warriors, who entered the match coming off a loss to Real Tamale United prior to the World Cup-induced break, rallied from a deficit to upset Berekum Chelsea 2-1 in a fiercely contested match.
Emmanuel Sarpong’s goal for Berekum Chelsea in the 28th minute punished Kotoko for their first-half wastefulness. In order to give the visitors the lead, the forward took advantage of an ineffective clearance by Andrews Appau and placed the ball beyond Ibrahim Danlad.
Despite the dangers, the Porcupine Warriors managed to hold on as Serge Zeze, who had been on the bench, restored parity in the 45th minute to keep Kotoko moving forward.
The Ugandan attacker netted his second league goal in the 66th minute to give Kotoko the maximum number of points. Stephen Mukwala was also on target as Kotoko eventually found the goal they needed to turn things around and win.
To connect with Enoch Morrison’s free kick from the left flank, he climbed tall above his defenders.
The victory moves Kotoko back up to second place, passing Hearts of Oak, who won last Tuesday against Nsoatreman, while Berekum Chelsea slides to the tenth spot.
Kotoko will now concentrate on their upcoming matchup against the league’s top team, Aduana Stars, on January 1.
