Nana Kwame Ampadu is the first singer to have 800 records of music in the world, popular historian, Yaw Frimpong Anokye has revealed.
He stated that the achievement of the legendary Ghanaian highlife musician was yet to be recognised by the whites.
Speaking exclusively on Max Morning Dew in Accra on Monday, Mr Anokye who doubles as a lawyer said the whites were not admitting to the fact and were projecting Nana Ampadu as the second person in the world to have such incredible records.
He noted that Nana Ampadu at the age of 16years already had 200 tracks to his credit.
Narrating how the journey of Nana Ampadu’s music started, Mr Anokye said Ampadu joined a band called Ramblers which was newly established by King Bruce in 1961 just after he completed school.
“Nana Ampadu always engaged those in the band to add him to it as he confessed to have written over 200 songs but he was always sacked. He persevered until one day he was given a microphone to sing,” he said.
The song which Nana Ampadu sang, Mr Anokye noted became the song of the year for four to five years in Ghana.
Born Patrick Kwame Ampadu at Obo Kwahu in the Eastern Region on March 31, 1945, he died on September 28, 2021 at the age of 76.
He was also known as “Adwomtofo Nyinaa Hene” and was the lead singer, chief songwriter, and founder of the “African Brothers Band” in 1963.
Nana Ampadu is noted for his popular songs including Ebi Te Yie and “Obra” which became a title soundtrack for a popular local Drama in the 1990s and has won several awards to his credit.
