Retired referee and FIFA instructor Joseph Wellington has lauded referee Collins Amoah for his outstanding performances this season in an interview on Max FM.
The 23-year-old referee, according to the FIFA instructor, was impressive in the 2022/2023 MTN FA Cup quarterfinal match he officiated between Kumasi King Faisal and BetPawa Premier League leaders Aduana FC at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Abrankese, Kumasi.
However, the Aduana FC coach, Paa Kwesi Fabin, criticized the performance of the referee after the match. He spoke to StarTimes Adepa TV after his side got eliminated: “It is true, we missed some chances in the game. I’ve never complained about refereeing, but today I’ll do that because the performance of the match officials was very bad.”
“Before the end of the first half, we had a clear penalty that the referee ignored, and we also had two clear penalties in the second half, but they were ignored.” “Look at the kind of penalty he awarded to King Faisal to level the score,” he quizzed.
“Officiating in the game was like a comedy.” “We played well but were unlucky to suffer an elimination via penalty shootouts.”
The retired referee believes young match officials such as Collins Amoah are doing so well despite criticism from some football fans and stakeholders.
