In their debut match against Portugal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Thursday, Andre Ayew, the captain of the senior national team, the Black Stars, acknowledged that they had to pay for their errors.
After giving up two quick goals in the space of two minutes in the game’s last quarter, Ghana fell to Portugal, 3-2.
The penalty against them, according to Captain Ayew in a post-match interview, damaged the team’s spirit and altered the game’s trajectory. He also added that they were unable to recover from Portugal’s second goal.
“In football you would always pay for your mistakes, and that is what happened to us.
“We made some errors, and they punished us for that. The last two goals from Portugal were so quick we could not recover, but we have always survived difficult conditions and we would come back good,” he added.
However, Ayew pointed out that they would have a chance to turn things around in the following game and that they had always managed to overcome adversity.
“We qualified for the world from a very difficult group and conditions. I know this team we always get out of very difficult conditions.
“I am convinced we would return good in the next game. We showed good character in the game against Portugal, and we can make things better in the next game,” Captain Ayew stated.
On Monday, November 28, Ghana’s second group game would be against South Korea.
