Veteran Highlife singer and guitarist, Smart Nkansah, has revealed that the late George Darko did not write his hit track “Ako Te Brofo.”
According to him, the 1983 smash hit was written by a colleague guitarist and song writer, Lee Dodoo.
Speaking in an interview with Kojo Addison on the Max Morning Show in Accra on Friday, the Sweet Talks Band founder indicated that many musicians who were noted for various hit tracks back in the 80s were not the actual composers.
“At that time, we, the guitarists, wrote the songs and gave them out to the singers, but we later realized all the credit went to the singers without us being mentioned. George Darko never wrote Ako Te Brofo; it was guitarist Lee Dodoo who composed it for him,” he mentioned.
Smart Nkansah noted that the inability of people to appreciate songwriters and composers reshaped their thoughts to the extent that the guitarists stopped giving out their songs to the singers.
He said the move led him to a hiatus and returned in the late 90s and early 2000s to release a track that became a hit and was noted for it.
Eulogizing George Darko, the “Mpena Twe” hitmaker confirmed that George was the “father of burger-highlife” and expressed the need for him to be celebrated.
