Movie lovers have slammed Tyler Perry’s new thriller Mea Culpa as ‘terrible’ and ‘one of the worst’ they’ve seen, but that hasn’t stopped the flick from rising to the top of the Netflix rankings.
The romantic thriller, which debuted on the streaming service on February 23, centers on Kelly Rowland’s character, a criminal defense lawyer who takes on a client who is charged with killing his lover.

Mea Culpa was written, filmed, and produced by Tyler. It stars Trevante Rhodes, Sean Sagar, and Nick Sagar. After its release, the film shot to the top of the box-office charts.
The romantic thriller received a rating of just 15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and movie lovers have since taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their dissatisfaction.
One person said, ‘Just finished Mea Culpa, and… I think Tyler needs to put the pen down for a while.’
‘The only good thing about this movie is Kelly’s face and outfits,’ added someone else.

One user wrote, ‘I know everyone is watching this movie because of Kelly, but it’s terrible.’
‘Mea Culpa was terrible, beautiful cast though,’ commented another person.
Another user added, ‘Tyler Perry really needs to stop writing movies. #MeaCulpa had a lot of potential, but in true Tyler Perry fashion, he did the most with the buildup just to give a very short and underwhelming climax.’
‘Two hours of my life wasted watching #MeaCulpa I don’t know why we keep letting Tyler Perry play in our faces like this,’ someone else said.
One user commented: ‘The only way I’ve been able to sit through this movie is to look at it as a comedy, because this can’t be serious. I know Tyler has done a lot for people, but why does he continue to write and direct?’
The film is available to stream now on Netflix.
