It is truly remarkable that Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has chosen to support Chuku’s, a Nigerian tapas restaurant in North London, with a generous donation of £8,000. This act of kindness comes at a critical moment when the restaurant was facing closure due to the increasing cost of living.
Emeka and Ifeyinwa Fredrick, the siblings who run Chuku’s, have been able to attract a wide range of customers, including A-list celebrities, professional football players, and regular patrons, due to their unique Nigerian Tapas and innovative take on traditional dishes.
Beyoncé, a global icon in the music industry who recently sold out five consecutive performances at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, has expanded her philanthropic efforts to support small businesses in London. Through her BeyGood Foundation, she established the Black Parade Small Business Impact Luncheon, which aims to recognize and aid individuals, communities, and small companies affected by economic inequality worldwide. The foundation committed a total of $1 million (£806,401.00) to help struggling businesses in various cities.
At the prestigious Four Seasons in Tower Hill, the Luncheon took place, hosting over 100 entrepreneurs and offering them the opportunity to win prizes totaling $100,000 (£806,090). Out of the 400 applications received, Emeka and Ifeyinwa were selected as part of the distinguished 2% of winners. Expressing her gratitude, Ifeyinwa, co-founder of Chuku’s, admitted that it still feels surreal to have Beyoncé support their restaurant. Emeka, her brother and business partner, emphasized the timeliness of the grant, as Chuku’s, like many other restaurants without financial reserves, has faced significant challenges during lockdowns and the escalating cost of living crisis.
The funding provided by Beyoncé’s grant will help alleviate some of the struggles faced by Chuku’s and enable them to continue showcasing Nigerian culture on Tottenham’s High Road.
This support comes as a lifeline for the restaurant as they strive to reach their fourth anniversary and overcome the hurdles brought about by the pandemic and economic difficulties.
