Seydou Zerbo, the head coach of Asante Kotoko, criticized the referee for awarding Karela United a penalty that wasn’t merited.
Karela United defeated Asante Kotoko 1-0 in their road game on February 2, 2023, in Anyinase, ending Asante Kotoko’s streak of victories.
Samuel Attah Kumi’s questionable penalty kick from the spot gave Karela the game’s lone goal.
The referee instead interpreted the penalty, which appeared to have happened outside the box, as having happened inside the box.
Coach Seydou Zerbo expressed his disappointment and questioned why the referee gave such a harsh penalty to ruin a good game in which neither team could score.
“The difference is, we had the chances to score go, we defeat ourselves because we had all the chances to score but we couldn’t score. Eventually, the referee gave an unwarranted penalty to them and they have their goal to score,” he told StarTimes.
Kotoko now sits outside the top four, four points down of Aduana Stars, who are currently in first place.
In their last six contests, the Porcupine Warriors have not suffered a defeat.
